11.

That shut me up.

I hadn’t planned on staying or leaving.

Hadn’t planned at all.

When I was a kid, I thought I’d take over the bakery from Jin and Mae.

Cam would help me.

We’d live together and make it work.

Which sounds like a fucking fairy tale now.

But those stories are what they are because of idiots like me who believe them.

12.

So I stayed in the Heights.

I worked at the bakery.

Mae and I managed to hold on to our regulars. Jin’s absence made them wary, but they knew us. Or they knew Mae. I’d started taking classes at HCC—for programming—which should’ve taken me out of the rotation, but I worked my ass off and did both.

We revamped the house’s storefront. I spent my mornings baking. I failed one class. And then a second. One of my whitelady professors asked why I was burning cash just to sleep in her course. I folded croissant layer after croissant layer after croissant layer until they came out right, and Mae said my food tasted like Jin’s, which made her happy, so I threw that shit out and I started all over again.

Eventually, we were bringing in as much cash as when Jin was alive.

Then we started clearing even more.
